Goose Creek Unity Day

Two years ago, Goose Creek principal Jimmy Huskey perceived there was a need for helping the families of his students at Goose Creek High School, many of whom are working class families who are struggling due to the sagging economy.

With a plan for a day of community assistance, Huskey garnered support for “Unity Day” from a number of his district colleagues. The high school partners with its feeder schools — Sedgefield Middle, Sedgefield Intermediate, West View Middle, Goose Creek Primary and Boulder Bluff Elementary – to host this event to serve its families.

“Working together makes our schools the hub of the community,” Huskey suggests. “The teams from these schools meet regularly to bounce around ideas, and to talk about how to meet the needs of our students. That time sharing ideas makes us stronger leaders.”

Huskey’s original desire was to provide needed supplies and clothing.   “As we talked to families who came to the school, we understood they have difficulty getting the basics,” he said. “We needed to do what we could to help these children.”

Since the first year, the project has expanded to include health services, outreach, food assistance and more.  A number of other community partners are participating in Unity Day, including the Lowcountry Food Bank, providing free boxes of food; Goodwill Industries, providing free clothing; Select Health, providing free health screenings; American Stripes Storage, providing free storage for event items. Food Lion, Publix, and Bi-Lo, providing a free lunch of hot dogs and chips.  Other area businesses are providing support with goods, services and free school supplies to be given out during the event.

In addition, student groups like the National Honor Society Beta Club provide volunteer support for the event.  Since the area is home to a large Hispanic population, Spanish-speaking translators from Goose Creek High will be available to provide assistance.

“We have a lot of people who are hurting right now. Unity Day fosters the understanding that schools are here for the community,” Huskey concluded.  “When people hear the word ‘community,’ we want them to think of their local schools.  We are here for the kids.”

This year’s Fall Festival is shaping up nicely. We are excited about our new location and joining with Crowfield Plantation for their premier 5k Run/Walk. The Drew Sineath & Associates’ 4th Annual Fall Festival shall be held Saturday, October 23rd from 9 am to 1 pm.

The Run/Walk to preserve the Crowfield ruins will begin at 8:30 am starting at Middleton Park and continuing onto Crowfield’s beautiful trail system. Our Festival will begin at 9 am for those participants who finish quickly and early festival attendees. We will have free food, live music, jump castles and games, fire engines from Goose Creek Fire Department, dog demonstrations from Berkeley County Sheriffs Office, dance performances from Metro North Dance Group, car displays from Stokes Kia, and so much more.

We have partnered with Helping Hands of Goose Creek again so bring your can food items for a free raffle ticket or purchase one for $1.00. Our goal this year is to raise over $1,000 and 2,000 pounds of food this year.

Word has spread quickly but I am happy to announce that there are still a few sponsorship spots available. We have one or two more spots for Platinum and 4-5 more spots for Gold. Home sales during June hit 1,022 transactions, the first time that sales crossed the 1,000-home threshold in nearly three years, according to the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors. 

Falling prices also encouraged buyers during uncertain economic times: The typical home sold for $185,612 during June, a decline from a $192,626 median price from June 2009, the association said.

The region’s real estate market growth has outpaced the rest of the country. Homes sold in the Charleston area so far this year topped last year’s year-to-date sales by 31 percent, while national sales increased by about 16 percent. The association also includes in its data a few properties outside of but adjacent to the tri-county area.

The tax credit was recently extended to allow homebuyers who were in a ratified contract by April 30th now have until Sept. 30th to close the transaction and receive the tax credit.  Click here to read more.

Wow, what a great time we had last night at the grand opening of the new single family model at Marrington Villas at Cobblestone, an Epcon Community.

Drew Sineath & Associates is the broker-in-charge for the community and we are happy to have the opportunity to work with such a fine company and established builder. Epcon came into the area not too long ago and began offering a new, high-end, luxury town homes in their signature pinwheel design. When news hit that the interest rate dropped again to a new historic low in over 50 years coupled with a report that new home sales decreased by 33%, local realtor Drew Sineath was asked to comment for Charleston’s Channel 2 News. Unfortunately Drew was unavailable so his marketing coordinator, Kristen Lanier, filled in for him.  Watch the video above or read the full story below.

Channel 2 talked to Kristen while she was covering for Drew Sineath & Associates new team members, Bob Winstead and Dianne McLawhorn, at Epcon Communities Marrington Villas at Cobblestone, a new development in Summerville SC offering luxury style detached homes and townhomes, while they trained in Ohio. Shown in the video above and pictured below.

The news that interest rates dropped to a new low today came as a bit of good news in what has been a tough market recently for many agents like Kristen.

She says the lower interest rate helps ease the bad news out Tuesday that new home sales were down 33% in May. Lanier says while the drop is not good, it was expected, since the real estate tax credits are expiring.

She is hoping Congress extends the credits to September. As far as the business in general, she says their company had it’s best year ever last year.

They are hoping to end this year strong as well.
