Goose Creek Realtor, Drew Sineath, Runs Half-Marathon for Save the Light
The Half-Marathon and 5K run to support the preservation of the Morris Island Lighthouse by Save the Light was held last weekend, February 7, on Folly Beach. Among the 700 runners registered for the event was Lowcountry’s Familiar Face, Drew Sineath. Finishing just over 2 hours (2:03:43 to be exact), Drew was number 173 to cross the finish line.
The Save the Light group is a non-profit organization formed to save the Morris Island Lighthouse from being swept away at sea. The lighthouse dates back as far as 1673. The structure as we know it today was built in 1876 after being destroyed in the Civil War to prevent the use by Union troops as a look out tower. It was not until 1938 when the lighthouse reached the water’s edge. With waves crashing in, the housing complex was dismantled and the lighthouse was automated.
Save the Light bought the historical treasure in 1999 and then donated it back to the state of South Carolina in 2000. Since then, they have been working with the US Army Corps of Engineers to have the structure evaluated. Several phases of restoration have been planned. In eight years, the organization has raised over $4.5 million.
