Description

Built as the parsonage for St. Michael's Church by master builders Miller & Fullerton. Miller is credited with building some of the finest houses in Charles Town: the Edward Rutledge House, and the Ash House at 32 South Battery. The first minister of St. Michael's Church was Robert Cooper (1731-1815), an Oxford Alumnus. He lived in the new rectory until he was dismissed in 1776, because of his loyalty to the Crown. The Revolutionary government expelled him from the Colonies in 1777. The house was sold in 1825 to Dr. William Read, who served in the Revolutionary War as Surgeon General under General George Washington. Dr. Read died at 92 and is buried in the St. Michael's Churchyard. There is a Historic Charleston Foundation façade easement on this property. Completely restored.
