Great history. Great location. The West Ashley area is considered the area west of the Charleston peninsula, or west of the Ashley River. You will find a large selection of moderately priced homes in the various communities that make up the greater West Ashley area. One of the great features about West Ashley is its location relative to downtown Charleston. If you commute downtown for work, West Ashley can be a good affordable option.
Considered by many to be one of the oldest suburbs in the Charleston area as well as one of the closest to downtown, it’s easy to see why it is on top of everyone’s list as one of the best places to live in Charleston, SC. If you are a history buff, you’ll be interested to learn about Charles Towne Landing. Charleston Town Landing is a state historic site located just off of Route 171 in West Ashley, and it is the location where the English colonists established their first permanent settlement in the Carolinas in 1670.
Located in the area just East of the Cooper River and the Charleston Peninsula, you’ll find Mount Pleasant, which is also a great location, and a great place to live in the Charleston area. The Sewee Indians originally inhabited the Mount Pleasant area, but the first European settlers arrived in 1680 under the command of Captain Florentia O’Sullivan, which is where Sullivan’s Island gets its name.
Mount Pleasant is a great community for young families, and its hallmark characteristic over the past few decades has been its rapid growth. This is seen currently in the expansion of Hwy 17 through Mount Pleasant. Also, Mount Pleasant is the fifth largest municipality in South Carolina and the population in 2010 were 67,843 according to the 2010 US Census.
Goose Creek is considered the area located in the southern part of Berkeley County, South Carolina. The city itself was established in 1961, and it has maintained a great balance between a small town feel with growth. Goose Creek is considered to be the 10th largest municipality in South Carolina. It’s location and affordability makes it a great option for young families. It is located approximately 20 miles from Charleston.
Known to locals as “Flowertown,” Summerville South Carolina is truly a beautiful place to call home. The town of Summerville is located just 24 miles from downtown Charleston, which makes it a great place to live. Summerville hosts several one of a kind events throughout the year, and the Flowertown Festival is one of those events – it is held in Azalea Park, a beautiful 12 acre park in the heart of the town. Summerville is home to many houses and buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is truly a charming place to call home.
Daniel Island has truly emerged as one of the top places to live around the Charleston, SC area. You’ll find a unique blend of shops, businesses, schools, churches and neighborhoods, all located on the island. The area known as Daniel Island is located just 3 miles north of the Charleston Harbor, between the Cooper and Wando rivers. It lies within Berkeley County. However it was annexed by the City of Charleston. It is a beautiful setting with a great location making it a top choice as one of the best places to live around the Charleston area.
