SC HELP Program Can Give Homeowners Up To $20,000 For Missed Mortgage Payments

Thousands more have fallen behind on mortgage payments and risk losing their homes in the aftermath of the worst recession since the Great Depression. The Obama administration program has pumped close to $300 million into the state to help those at risk of foreclosure keep the roof over their heads or move into a more manageable living arrangement.
Homeowners can get up to $20,000 to catch up on missed mortgage payments and bring the mortgage current. Those who are still struggling to find a job can get up to $36,000 in forgivable funds to make monthly mortgage payments for a period of time — until their financial situation improves.

Getting help
The SC HELP program has spent between $8 million and $9 million to help struggling South Carolina homeowners avoid foreclosure. Another $295 million is available until 2017, at the latest. Homeowners with mortgages of $729,000 or less can apply to see if they are eligible for help.

Kayaking in the Lowcountry

With so much water right outside our doors, it is no wonder that kayaking continues to grow in popularity in the area. Thinking about getting started? We’ve assembled a variety of useful resources to help you give this paddle sport a try.

First off, your timing is perfect for exploring all the possibilities by attending the hugely popular East Coast Canoe and Kayak Festival held at James Island County Park. This year’s event takes place at April 20-22, 2012. The festival includes on-water classes and demonstrations geared for everyone from novice to experienced paddlers. Dozens of vendors are also on hand so that you can test boats, paddles, and accessories.

Like any idea that pops up in our minds, you’ll be wise to “take a test drive” before fully committing to your . I’m reminded of the oft heard tale of the newly retired couple who has dreamed of spending their golden years on the open road, enjoying each others company traveling to interesting destinations in a brand new RV. You wouldn’t be surprised to hear that many RVs are sold before they are even a year old after the owners decide that RV travel is not for them. While kayaks and canoes are relatively inexpensive, we highly recommend taking one out for a spin before you buy one. If you are unable to attend the East Coast Canoe and Kayak Festival, don’t worry. The Lowcountry is blessed with plenty of outfitters who are happy to introduce you to the water. Guided tours offer a great opportunity to paddle while picking the brain of your tour guide about places to paddle, equipment, etc. Here are several well established businesses you might consider:

Charleston Watersport

When your initiation into the sport is complete (for some it only takes one trip into the marshes!) you’ll begin the process of making a purchase. All of the local guiding companies can help you in this regard. You may also want to do a little research online. These two sites can help you get familiar with what’s available and and what price: http://www.paddling.net/buyersguide/ and http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/learn/kayak.html

We have found that local shops are very competitive with the online sites – plus you get the added advantage of actually being able to sit in the product before making a decision. Expect to pay somewhere between $1,000 – $2,000 for your first kayak.

Once you are a bona fide kayak owner the real fun begins: deciding where to paddle! We highly recommend getting involved with one of several local groups that meet up for the sole purpose of paddling together. Here are a few of our favorites:

Lastly, you can do your own research online to find cool new spots to explore. We hear that this book, from local kayaker Ralph Earhart is worth it: Kayak Charleston. Or jump online to browse these two websites:

Happy Paddling!

Goose Creek Football Star Commits to University of Georgia

After winning the South Carolina AAAA Football title last year, Goose Creek High School’s stand out players continue to grab the attention of top collegiate football programs. Junior Gator wide receiver Tramel Terry recently committed to the University of Georgia where he may play wide receiver and defensive back. Locals were disappointed that Tramel chose to go out of state, but in an interview with Dawgs247 reporter Rusty Mansell he indicated that he really wanted to play in the SEC and “It was Georgia for me, and nobody was really able to knock them out of my top spot.” South Carolina was in the running while Clemson got a look only because of their status as a top engineering school. Terry says he “bonded” with several Georgia players including sophomore wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell and in the end his new teammates and coaches made Georgia feel like home.

Goose Creek fans can be proud as one of their local heroes achieves one of his dreams. We will also have the opportunity to watch and enjoy his unique talents during his senior year. South Carolina and Clemson fans may be disappointed that he didn’t stay in-state, but as Terry said “I am at peace with my decision, so I know I made the right one.”
