A local teen with a big heart, Stephen Orvin of Moncks Corner, organizes a back to school outreach for needy children in Goose Creek, SC. After attending three years at Saint Johns Christian Academy in Moncks Corner, Stephen’s heart has been lead into youth ministry. He has a focus on outreach not overseas by right here in our backyard. The 17 year old rallied his church congregation and local businesses to help support his mission of giving back to the children of Goose Creek. Stephen is a proud member of Sonrise Christian Church, located on the outskirts of Goose Creek. The teen was able to organize 150 bags stuffed with pencils, pens, paper, folders, notebooks, glue, erasers, crayonns, a ruler, scissors, and book marks to be distributed to 8 near-by neighborhioods. Nineteen book bags were donated and filled with school supplies for a select group of students that needed them most.  Drew Sineath & Associates would like to thank this young man for his hard work and dedication to the community. We wish all students a safe and happy return to the 2009-2010 school year and pray that the lord continues to work in young lives like Stephen.

Tonight, at the Music Farm, Trident United Way is hosting a Battle of the Bands event starting at 5:30. This year, the 4th annual Battle of the bands will feature: Dark Thirty, Steel Petals, Hundred Hands Down, Skye Paige & The Original Recipe more. Not only to bands compete, but everyone works together to raise awareness of Trident United Way.  “Trident United Way works to solve the most critical problems facing people in the Lowcountry. Trident United Way is the organization in the Lowcountry that brings together people, businesses, government, and non-profit organizations to address our most pressing human service problems. Trident United Way focuses on education, income and health — the building blocks of a good life.”

The event starts at 5:30 tonight. It’s almost time for the 39th Annual Sertoma Football Classic. This year, August 20th and 21st, schools from around the lowcountry will meet at The Citadel’s Johnson Hagood Stadium. Each team will play for 1 quarter. Not only does the event showcase the football players, but the cheerleaders and bands will be out in full force cheering on their teams during that schools allotted quarter. The school showing the most spirit will be awarded a trophy at the end of the event.

The 2009 Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series came to an end this Sunday. I not only participated in the final race but became a secondary sponsor to the event by giving away string along bags commemorating the event! We handed out over 400 bags during the two days. We met some awesome people. There were a lot of first time participants to the triathlon. I remember meeting Elizabeth and her friend Robin who were very excited about their first ever triathlon. Then there was my Georgia friend who was formally a cyclist that was doing his first ever tri. He surprisingly did way better on the run that he had expected. And then there was Sue. This woman is amazing. She races to glorify God with Hebrews 12:1-2 written on her back. She is a mother of four with a fifth foster child. All were in attendance on Sunday. Her two oldest girls usually compete in the event but chose to run the YMCA Kid’s Triathlon on Saturday. I don’t see how she has time to train.

That is the greatest thing about the triathlon world or any active event for that matter. You meet some wonderful people. I’m sure I’ll run into Sue again. Way to go Sue. You give us all inspiration. And of course there is Bill. The 79-year old triathlete has been doing these races for years. Bill, I got you this time! I finished the final race in 1:21.29, shaving over 5 minutes off my last race. Thanks, in part, to my friend Danny Moore at Clearview AutoGlass. Danny let me borrow is “Corvette” bike for the race. Now I know what it feels like to actually pass someone (on the bike)!  Thanks Danny. You selling that bike? LOL.

Now it’s on to Kiawah where I will be training for the upcoming Kiawah Olympic Triathlon September 20, 2009. The swim is way more challenging, while the run and bike is doubled. Here we go!

I just wanted to thank my fantastic team, who not only came out to support Drew Sineath & Associates by helping to give away the bags, but for cheering me on during the race. I sure needed it toward the end during the run.  Thanks guys! I think we all had a blast. We are looking forward to doing the event next year. I also wanted to thank CSTS race coordinators Paul and Kathleen King. You guys managed another great series of races this year. Way to go guys! We are looking forward to a fifth race next year! These folks work long, hard hours and have some wonderful volunteers. Now, I know the secret of how they keep their volunteers coming back! Hey guys, maybe I’ll try that same approach! The Kings know what I’m talking about. LOL.
