The purpose of the Cooper River Bridge Run is to promote fitness, health, and improve quality of life. The goal of the Bridge Run is to educate and promote healthier lifestyles therefore making Charleston a healthier community.

MUSC - Medical University of South Carolina

The ten-story Medical University Hospital accepted its first patients in 1955. In 1985, the name of the hospital and its clinics was changed to MUSC Medical Center, reflecting its function in an academic health institution and its wide range of services to the public. This comprehensive facility is now comprised of three separate hospitals (the University Hospital, the Institute of Psychiatry, and the Children's Hospital). The Medical Center includes centers for specialized care (Heart Center, Transplantation Center, Hollings Cancer Center, Digestive Diseases Center). Numerous outpatient facilities include the Family Medicine Center, University Diagnostic Center, and affiliated faculty practice ambulatory care centers. In the past ten years, $200 million in capital improvements for the Medical Center focused resources on improved quality of patient care and accessibility of services. In 2003-04 there were over 27,000 inpatient admissions and almost 630,000 outpatient visits.

American Military Museum

The American Military Museum in Charleston, S.C., offers a one-of-a-kind experience in military history for travelers and residents. Located in Aquarium Wharf adjacent to the debarkation point for tours to historic Fort Sumter, the Museum is filled with authentic artifacts from 14 American conflicts from the Revolutionary War through the recent war in Iraq. Visitors marvel at 70 display cases filled with 260 uniforms, 33 flags, medals and hundreds of military artifacts from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

 

Children's Museum of the Low Country

The Children's Museum of the Lowcountry (CML) is Charleston's first hands-on learning environment designed just for children ages 3 months to 12 years and their families. Since opening its doors on September 21, 2003, more than 250,000 visitors have explored the museum's eight interactive exhibits, ranging from a full-scale shrimp boat to an area just for infants and toddlers. North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center

A few short years ago, leadership from the City of North Charleston and American LaFrance had a dream of partnering together to build a museum that would showcase the corporate collection of antique fire fighting apparatus while educating visitors on the heritage of fire fighting, the dangers of fire and the methods of fire prevention. Today, we are pleased to see that dream become reality with the opening of the North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center which is conveniently located adjacent to Tanger Outlet Mall. Also housed within the facility is North Charleston satellite office of the Convention and Visitors Bureau which will provide services to tourists coming through and staying in North Charleston. As visitors enter the facility with the massive, mahogany firehouse doors into the 25,000 square foot facility, they take a step back in time.

 

The Charleston Museum

The Charleston Renaissance Gallery

The Charleston Renaissance Gallery is the nation's foremost gallery specializing in fine art of the American South. Our gallery offers nineteenth and twentieth century masterworks, including oils, works on paper and sculpture; the art of the Charleston Renaissance; and select works from the estate of Elizabeth O'Neill Verner. Established as Robert M. Hicklin Jr., Inc. in 1972, the gallery counts private collectors from across the country and around the world, as well as premier national institutions, among its clients. In addition to regular exhibitions and educational symposiums, the gallery has published several scholarly catalogues and three major volumes on Southern art. The Gibbs Museum of Art

The Gibbes Museum of Art is located in Charleston’s Historic District at 135 Meeting Street (2 blocks south of the Market between Cumberland and Queen Streets). Over 10,000 pieces of art are featured in Gibbes Museum of Arts permanent collection. The collection focuses on fine American art with an emphasis on original Charleston works. Over 300 years of Americas history is represented through paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, portraits and sculpture. A remarkable array of Japanese wood block prints is on display as well as paintings by such noted artists as Washington Allston, Gilbert Stuart and America's first professional female artist, Henrietta Johnston.

Charleston Tea Plantation

America's only tea garden. Over 150 years ago, tea planters brought their finest ancestral tea bushes from China and India to Wadmalaw Island near the historic old city of Charleston, SC. Now the direct descendants of these very plants have been lovingly restored to their former grandeur here at the Charleston Tea Plantation, a lush subtropical tea farm.

 

Cypress Gardens

Located near Charleston, SC, Cypress Gardens is a lowcountry scenic treasure. Visit the Butterfly House, Aquarium and Reptile Center. Crocodile Isle features exhibits of crocodiles & alligators in captivity. The pristine blackwater swamp offers breathtaking views of mirrored reflections of tall cypress and tupelo trees. Formerly one of the areas largest rice plantations, Cypress Gardens has a fascinating history. Drayton Hall Plantation

Visit Drayton Hall, a leader in Charleston's historic preservation movement, in southern plantation history, and in public education. Drayton Hall was a rice plantation, a military headquarters, a site for strip mining, and a country retreat before it became a National Trust historic site. Its record stretches over three centuries of American history, and it is the only plantation house on the Ashley River that survives today.

 

Magnolia Plantation

Welcome to Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. Founded in 1676 by the Drayton family, Magnolia Plantation has survived the centuries and witnessed the history of our nation unfold before it from the American Revolution through the Civil War and beyond. It is the oldest public tourist site in the Lowcountry, and the oldest public gardens in America, opening its doors to visitors in 1872 to view the thousands of beautiful flowers and plants in its famous gardens. So join us here at Magnolia Plantation to experience the beauty of its gardens and its rich history today.

 

Mepkin Abby Monastery

Mepkin Abbey was founded in 1949 in the Low Country of South Carolina by 29 monks coming from the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky. Thousands continue to visit us and to stroll through these Gardens each year. The monks of Mepkin Abbey welcome many kinds of visitors. People come because they have heard of our beautiful environment, our life of prayer, work, and study, because of the quiet and peace they can find here, or because they are curious about our life and mission.

 

Middleton Place

Middleton Place was established early in the life of the Carolina colony and served as a base of operations for a great Low Country planter family and was home to a dynamic African-American slave community. Begun in 1741 by Henry Middleton, President of the First Continental Congress, the 60-acre landscaped garden was both an intellectual and emotional focus for successive generations of Middletons. Today, Middleton Place is a thriving restoration or eighteenth and nineteenth century plantation life. Having survived wars, earthquakes, and hurricanes, including Hurricane Hugo in September of 1989, Middleton Place remains a resilient masterpiece of landscape design and a well-preserved plantation that demonstrates two centuries of plantation life. Visitors are welcome to walk the beautiful gardens and stable yards, explore the museum house, enjoy many outdoor activities like horse back ridding or canoeing, relax in the peaceful inn, and taste the old south in classy restaurant.

 

Santee Canal State Park and Berkeley Museum & Heritage Center

Old Santee Canal Park commemorates South Carolina's beautiful natural resources and emphasizes the tremendous historical significance of the Santee Canal. Less than 30 minutes away from downtown Charleston in historic Berkeley County, Old Santee Canal Park offers its visitors a glimpse at the events that shaped our lives and our communities as we know them today. The park features The Stony Landing House, The Berkeley Museum, an interactive Kids Museum and Nature Park, and miles of walking trails.

Charleston Southern University

Charleston Southern focuses its educational programs on five life preparation concepts: values and ethics, communication, leadership, service and wellness. These five concepts not only help our students prepare for successful careers -- they help prepare our students for life. The University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees. Students can choose from more than 32 undergraduate majors and graduate programs in business, criminal justice and education. Each degree program is combined with a comprehensive liberal arts foundation which is designed to develop problem-solving and communication skills. Beyond the classroom, students can participate in a variety of campus activities including academic clubs, service organizations, intramural athletics and campus ministries. The University offers intercollegiate athletics for both men and women, competing in the NCAA Division I Big South Conference. Charleston Southern fields teams in basketball, baseball, softball, women's soccer, cross country, track and field, golf, tennis and volleyball, as well as a Division I-AA football team.

 

College of Charleston

Founded in 1770 and chartered in 1785, the College of Charleston is the oldest institution of higher education in the state of South Carolina and the thirteenth oldest in the United States. Incorporated into the South Carolina State College System in 1970, the College began to serve a much broader region. Whereas the first class conducted at the College contained about a dozen Charlestonians, the student body now numbers approximately 9,800 students, 70 percent of whom are South Carolinians; other students come from 50 states and 65 foreign countries. The enduring commitment to the liberal arts is seen in the core curriculum of the College which requires study in English, history, modern and classical languages, math, science, the arts, and the social sciences. At the same time, the College has expanded its offerings to include new and emerging fields of study.

 

Dorchester School District 2

Dorchester District Two is the fastest growing school district in the state according to recent state statistics. Currently serving more than 20,400 students, the school system is growing more than 900 students each year as families choose to make their homes in the area because of the award-winning school system. We have eleven elementary schools, six middle schools, and two high schools currently serving the suburban community of Summerville. It is a challenging yet exciting time for our district as all decisions and future plans are driven by student achievement and serving the needs of each student.

 

Dorchester School District 4

Dorchester School District Four is located among moss-draped live oaks and a tradition-rich lowcountry lifestyle. The district's proximity to the metropolitan areas of Charleston, Summerville, Orangeburg, and Columbia offers residents the opportunity to reside in a relaxed atmosphere while having access to the cultural and economic benefits of the city. All children reaching age four (4) by September 1 may participate in special classes designed to prepare them for school. Our elementary schools provide kindergarten experiences to prepare students in reading, writing, and math readiness. The elementary program is designed to give students a firm foundation in reading, math, sciences, social studies, and life skills. The middle school curriculum is focused on meeting the needs of pre-adolescents. The curriculum includes a strong focus on reading and math while incorporating exploratory offerings and a strong career decision-making focus. The secondary curriculum provides a comprehensive educational program with the emphasis placed on meeting the diverse needs of the students and preparing them to be lifelong learners. The district offers honors/advanced placement, college prep, tech prep, and occupational courses. School-to-Work initiatives are a major focus of the secondary curriculum. The Odyssey Educational Center (OEC) in Saint George provides an alternative school setting for middle school students who need extra assistance to earn promotion to a higher grade level. Faith Christian School is a ministry of Faith Assembly of God located in Summerville, SC. Faith Christian School is a college preparatory school for grades k4-12 that exists to help Christian parents disciple their Christian children.

Northwoods Academy

Northwood Academy serves approximately 800 students in K-4 through 12th grade. Students come from across the Charleston area and represent a variety of Christian denominations. When the school was founded in 1978, under the banner of Northwood Christian School, it boasted 80 students in one classroom. Today the school occupies two campuses, employs over 50 teachers, and is one of the ten largest SCISA schools.

The Citadel : The Military College of South Carolina

The Citadel was established in 1842 by an act of the South Carolina General Assembly and was originally located on Marion Square in downtown Charleston. Today the picturesque campus, which was moved in 1922 to the bank of the Ashley River, is home to 24 major buildings and 1,900 young men and women enrolled in 19 degree programs. The College of Graduate and Professional Studies (CGPS) offers evening and summer, coeducational undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Trident Technical College

Charleston Water System

Charleston Water System is a public water and wastewater utility governed by a Board of Commissioners. We provide water and wastewater service to the City of Charleston, including West Ashley, Daniel Island, and James Island. In addition to our direct retail customers, we provide water service to other water utilities and government agencies in the Lowcountry and treat wastewater from Folly Beach, Hollywood, Ravenel, and Meggett on a wholesale basis.
